Wednesday, 4/19/06 - Our next assignment
On Wednesday morning, we sat and waited for our assignment. We had no idea what it would be, which increased the fun.
Soon Pastor Doug of Berean (check out Berean church's "Katrina Blog", which has a link back to THIS blog, by clicking here) came out and told us that nine of us would be going to the recently reopened Fischer Elementary School. Five women (Grace, Bev, Sarah, Kay, and Susie) separated into classrooms and helped the teachers with their new classes. Four men (Stan, Steve S., Steve F., and Jim) also went and moved furniture in preparation for a new kindergarten class, unloaded computers and monitors from a truck and set up computer stations. (I apologize for the lack of team member photos from the elementary school, I didn't go to this school and the group that went were dispersed to different areas so we don't have many).

Three of us (Ron, Vickie & Jacqui) went to Edna Karr High School, which had previously been a magnet school but reopened in December 2005 as a public school open to all. We were met with great enthusiasm and told over and over again by administrator, Lee Green, "We definitely need you. We have work for you to do. We can definitely use you". Until one month ago, a single counselor was doing the job of being school guidance counselor and collecting grade reports for all the students who had been displaced. Collecting this information was especially critical for graduating seniors.
We went through student files to determine what information was needed, got the contact information for the schools (some as far away as California, Colorado, and Virginia), sent faxes to request information, and recorded and filed the faxes as they came in.

Jacqui,
This is an outstanding site. It was great to see these pictures. Thank you for posting them.
Glad you all made it home safe and sound.
